Our first introduction to Dylan's father takes place at the bus stop, as the driver informs Lana and Dylan that someone is waiting for them outside. The image of Andrew standing patiently in the middle of a heavy snowstorm, having walked there simply to meet his wife and son, felt like the perfect way to introduce his character. Before he even speaks, the reader understands who he is: a man who always places his family above everything else, including his own comfort and well-being. I wanted readers to immediately grasp his values and his devotion.

Recognising the opportunity to supplement the family's income, he chooses to tutor students from wealthier households, allowing him to earn the extra money they so desperately need.
